A hybrid is more than its battery. The inverter, cooling systems, 12-volt battery and regenerative brakes all have to work together. We've been repairing hybrids for years, and this page covers the systems around the battery. For the battery itself, see our hybrid battery replacement page.

Why Phoenix is hard on hybrids

Heat is the biggest enemy of hybrid batteries and electronics. A clogged battery cooling fan or a weak inverter coolant pump can lead to expensive failures. Regular checks, as part of your factory recommended services, help catch problems early.

Frequently asked questions

What does "check hybrid system" mean?

It means the car's computer has found a problem in the hybrid system. It could be the battery, inverter, cooling or a sensor. We read the codes and test the system to find out.

Why does my hybrid battery have a cooling fan?

The battery needs cool air to stay healthy. In Phoenix, the fan and its filter can clog with dust and pet hair, which lets the battery overheat. Cleaning it is simple maintenance that helps protect the battery.

Can a bad 12-volt battery stop a hybrid from starting?

Yes. Hybrids still use a small 12-volt battery to power up the system. If it's weak, the car may not start even when the hybrid battery is fine.

Do you replace hybrid batteries too?

Yes. See our hybrid battery replacement page for details on your options.
